The Metropolitan Opera presents modern opera masterpieces in an entertaining, theatrical format—featuring some of the greatest opera stars in the world. With several new productions in 2008, the Met continues to build on its tradition of broadcasting performances around the world to reach millions of opera fans.

Magic Flute Magic Flute
Dancing bears and flying birds are all brought to life through director Julie Taymor's ingenious use of puppetry. Conducted by beloved maestro James Levine, this abridged version of Mozart's opera is sung in English by a young cast that includes Nathan Gunn as Papageno and Erika Miklósa as Queen of the Night.

Romeo et Juliette Romeo et Juliette
Anna Netrebko as Juliette and Roberto Alagna as Roméo ignite this Gounod opera based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Plácido Domingo leads the orchestra and chorus.

Macbeth Macbeth
Maria Guleghina, Željko Lucic, Dimitri Pittas and John Relyea star in this new production of Verdi's Macbeth, directed by Adrian Noble and conducted by James Levine.

I Puritani I Puritani
Russian soprano Anna Netrebko stars as the fragile Elvira, who goes mad when abandoned at the altar. With her vocal fireworks and deep pathos, Netrebko shines in Bellini's bel canto opera classic.

First Emperor
Chinese composer Tan Dun's epic opera features legendary tenor Plàcido Domingo as Emperor Qin, the man who built the Great Wall and gave China its name. Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou stages this monumental production.

Young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez is the dashing Count Almaviva in Bart Sher's rollicking new production of a classic Rossini opera.

James Levine conducts Puccini's popular triptych of one-acts that runs the gamut of styles and emotions. Broadway luminary Jack O'Brien directs this opera that includes a story of a faithless wife and her doomed lover.
