Gaslight Square Project
While you've probably heard or
read about revitalization efforts in St. Louis' residential
neighborhoods, you'll now have a chance to get a little
closer and gain a better understanding as a result of Channel
9's Rebuilding St. Louis television program. Now
in its second year of collaboration with the Home Builders
Association of Greater St. Louis, Channel 9's Rebuilding
St. Louis will track the redevelopment of one of St.
Louis' most beloved historical neighborhoods: Gaslight Square.
In the 1950s and early '60s, this entertainment district
was the place to be and to see rising stars. Long abandoned,
Gaslight Square will be revitalized by developers Greg Vatterott
and Jerry King, who along with eight builders will be constructing
new housing that will be carefully designed for architectural
compatibility with the surrounding neighborhood.
The story of the revitalization of the Gaslight Square
neighborhood will be chronicled for one year, by Channel
9, from March 2004 through February 2005. Hometime's
Dean Johnson and Robin Hartl will visit St. Louis to kick
off the project. In the months to come, Channel 9 will air
Rebuilding St. Louis rehab updates, 90-second vignettes
that will track the neighborhood's rebirth. These updates
will air throughout Channel 9's broadcast day, particularly
during home improvement programming on Saturday and Sunday
evenings.
