Stephen Prina: Film Screening and Talk

Branford Marsalis to Play the Touhill  
What: After releasing the “dynamic” and “passionate” (Jazz Times) Braggtown in 2006, the multiple Grammy-nominated Branford Marsalis Quartet toured worldwide for two years before returning to the recording studio. The result is the nine-track recording Metamorphosen, which the band considers one of its strongest and most broadly appealing albums to date. Marsalis said he chose the title, which is German for metamorphoses, to emphasize the evolution of both his quartet and each individual member. Metamorphosen is another milestone from an ensemble that continues to set the pace regarding jazz creativity.

A Raisin in the Sun Performance
What: The Center Stage Theatre of St. Charles Community College will present the classic play “A Raisin in the Sun” March 3-7 in the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building theater on the SCC campus. “A Raisin in the Sun” shows the tragic impact of American history on a black family residing in Chicago in the 1950s. The play is based on the book by Lorraine Hansberry and will be directed by Hal Berry, SCC professor of history and theater.

Beverly Fishman at Bruno David Gallery  
What: Beverly Fishman delves into the cultural implications and consequences of pharmaceutical overload while enticing the audience with the pills' sleek visual seductiveness. The Pharmako sculptures evoke the overt appeal of the chemical compounds frequently used to alter our minds and bodies. Fishman's Xanadu Series of chrome pill sculptures takes the seduction and inclusion of the viewer to another level with gleaming exteriors that mask their dangerous possibilities.

Mardi Gras Mambo  
What: The annual Mardi Gras Mambo tour is hitting 11 cities this year and features The Neville Brothers with Dr. John and The Lower 911. Defining the deep soul of New Orleans, the tour is almost as legendary as New Orleans itself. And this distinctive joint concert of The Neville Brothers and Dr. John will put each groups’ musical gifts of rock, funk, blues and swamp boogie on display. This is a much-anticipated tour that garners great reviews. Last year Terry Perkins of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch called the concert “an evening of classic music that certainly set a high standard for any other performances this Mardi Gras season.”

Arianna String Quartet to Perfrom "Revolution!"  
What: The Arianna String Quartet (ASQ), recognized as one of America’s finest chamber ensembles will perform Revolution!, Beethoven’s complete Op. 18 Quartets. This third concert in the quartet’s 2009-10 four-show series at the Touhill Performing Arts Center is on Friday, February 20. Rounding out the quartet of highly accomplished musicians are violinists John McGrosso and David Gillham. Poetic Palette: The Paintings of Ann Brown
What: The works on view have a musical quality to them. They contain rhythm and in many ways resemble the visual analogy of a poem. Marlissa Hudson's St. Louis Symphony Debut  
What: St. Louis-born American soprano Marlissa Hudson has been described as possessing “… warm, bright, spinning tones…” and “incredible vocal endurance.” Ms. Hudson made her professional debut while a student, performing “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess with the Baltimore Symphony Pops Orchestra under the baton of Marvin Hamlisch. She later performed the entire role of Bess with Union Avenue Opera in St. Louis.

Open Auditions for "Isn't It Romantic"
What: St. Charles Community College’s Center Stage Theatre is holding open auditions for the upcoming production of the play “Isn’t It Romantic,” written by Wendy Wasserstein. What: The operetta H.M.S. Pinafore, presented by the renowned New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, drops anchor in St. Louis February 20 and 21 at The Touhill Performing Arts Center. Curtain times for the two-show engagement in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall are Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. H.M.S. Pinafore (or The Lass That Loved A Sailor) was a comedic masterpiece of the legendary composing duo Gilbert and Sullivan. Premiering in 1878, it was their first blockbuster hit and has remained a favorite of musical theater, no doubt due to Gilbert’s brilliantly witty libretto and Sullivan’s charming melodies. The show’s satirical jabs at the vaunted British Navy and at rigid Victorian class distinctions remain as readily understandable in the new millennium as they were over 100 years ago.

What: “Writing requires collaboration with the reader and both are private acts. But encountering someone’s private thoughts in a public space changes the dynamic,” states artist Tim Curtis. In See How My Mind Works, Tim Curtis explores the use of language and text in concert with visual art. The Front Room
What: The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is pleased to announce a new season of The Front Room. Running alongside the Main Galleries, The Front Room operates at a different rhythm, with exhibitions lasting anywhere from a day to a few weeks. These reactive, nimble, provisional, and experimental exhibitions test the boundaries of conventional programming and echo the elasticity of contemporary culture.

Critical Mass Creative Stimulus  
What: Critical Mass Creative Stimulus, an exhibition featuring installations by the 2009 recipients of the first Creative Stimulus Project, sponsored by Critical Mass for the Visual Arts, a nonprofit organization that promotes contemporary art in the St. Louis area. These commissions, selected by jurors Terry Suhre, Shannon Fitzgerald and Dana Turkovic, recognize artists by providing an honorarium and an opportunity to exhibit their work at The Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission (RAC).

Fete du Bon Vieux Temps  
What: The Fete is a Colonial Mardi Gras with special activities at Cahokia's 18th century historic sites. A highlight is the colonial Mardi Gras Ball where contre-dances, reels and waltzes are enjoyed with traditional fiddle music.
